Electric vehicles are the future, and you’ve probably noticed that the automakers come up with more EVs lined up for you each year.
Due to the growing interest in these vehicles, the need for electric vehicle charging stations both at home, in public, and in commercial areas has grown.
At home, you can simply install your charging station in your garage.
Types of EV charging stations
EV charging stations can be categorized into three levels:
- Level 1 charging
These chargers use the standard 120-voltage AC plug and can simply be plugged into a standard electrical outlet. The charging rates in level 1 charging can cover an average of 1.4kw to 3kw.
This is an approximation of 8 to 12 hours of charging time. - Level 2 charging
Level 2 charging uses 240-volt AC.
This charges faster than the level 1 chargers. They have a charging rate of 7kW-22kW, and depending on the capacity of your battery, the approximate time is 1 to 11hours.
They are mostly used for public charging like commercial parking lots. But, for use at home, you need 240V AC plugs and the right equipment set-up. - Level 3 charging (fast charging)
This high-power charging station is less common than level 1 and 2 charging, but they are more prevalent in commercial settings.
These chargers give out charging of 480V DC or AC plugs, and the time taken for a complete charge is roughly 20 minutes to an hour.
Important note: unless you’re an experienced electrician, you shouldn’t attempt to install your EV charging station.
Once you’ve bought your charger, find a reliable company specializing in EV charging station installation.
